9/11/14 Meeting Minutes

  • Fall Retreat will be October 3rd and 4th, sign up with Melanie, it costs $5, first come first serve. We will be meeting at Camp Broadstone at 6:00 and will leave around 1:00 on Saturday.
  • SGA Representative: Anna Glass! Congratulations!!!
  • ALF Women's Leadership an email about the track will be going out soon with a doodle pool about meeting up. We don't need the $500, they are just asking us to help look for speakers.
  • Coffee Hours: The first one will be held September 17th from 11-1 here in the Women's Center. We are still looking for speakers.
  • Maleficent: September 25th-27th in IG Greer. Judy Haus is trying to bring panel to discuss sexual assault symbolism in the movie.
  • Coffee with Congress: A congresswoman and congressman are coming to campus to do a question and answer style discussion between students and congress. We decided to help advertise for the event which will be held in Room 124 in the Reich College of Education building on October 6th from 7:00 to 8:30. The event is free and if enough interest is shown there may be reserved seating for the WC.
  • show that women don't have to belong to the home sweet home but can be what they want to be, i.e. doctors, lawyers, business executives, and so on. If you're interested in helping out with Homecoming which includes the Banner, Float, Kazoo Band, and Lip Sync please contact Ariel Malec.
  • Blue Ridge Women: a film about women farming, we may show a film about female farming or we could volunteer on farms, and we could possibly send a volunteer to speak with a Coordinator on Tuesday at 1. Email Katelyn if you are interested.
  • OPEN HOUSE: We need more volunteers for Open House on September 20th from 9:30 - 12:00, we need someone at Convocation from 12:00-1:00 and then 3 people in the Student Union from 10:30 - 12:00. If you're interested please email Melanie!
  • Feminist Coming Out Day: we have a tent reserved for October 1st and we will be making t-shirts in the center from 6-8 on Tuesday September 16th.

Recent Events:

  • In light of the missing Appalachian State student and the numerous sexual assaults on and off campus we are proposing ideas to help make campus safer.
    1. Propose legislation on helping better light the Greenwood lot and add more emergency lights.
    2. Advertise the Center as a safe space for discussing recent events
    3. Possibly inviting counselors from the Counseling Center
    4. Proposing accountability legislation, asking Chancellor to discuss consequences of committing sexual assault, to be further discussed at a later date.
  • Blue Ridge Women: a film about women farming
  • Carolina Conference for Queer Youth- held at UNC Charlotte on October 17th. Free! At the UNCC Student Union. There is a flyer in the WC if you would like more information.
  • Ignite NC: Rachel is trying to get people involved in voting rights. Working to get polling places on campus, voter registration, training is at the end of October. September 23rd is Rock the Vote and there will be a March to the Polls in the future.
  • Donation for Oasis: Justis is organizing a drive for feminine products for Oasis.
  • Social Justice Poetry: the idea of having female spoken word poets come in to have a social justice themed poetry event
  • Blood Drive: The blood drive is September 24th, sign up with the Women's Center. Please sign the petition that the LGBTQ Center has to lift the blood ban. There is an interest meeting in the LGBTQ Center on Monday at 8:30.
