9/26/13 Meeting Minutes

WHAT IS CONSENT

The attendees of the Women's Ceter meeting were briefly interviewed by Caitlin, who is doing an audio documentary on the meaning of consent.

LUNCH AND LEARNS

Overall, the Lunch and Learns were a success! Thanks to all who organized them and attended.

SSNC

If you are interested in partnering with a nonpartisan organization working to end voter suppression in North Carolina, sign the petition located in the Center, or volunteer to be a "vote defender." Contact Amelia in the Center or Albert in the LGBT Center for more information.

COLORADO FLOOD RELIEF

The Center voted to donate money from a bake sale to Naropa University in Colorado, where Tonya is located. They provide housing, food, counseling, and other services to victims of the recent flood in Colorado. The bake sale will take place sometime after Fall Break, and it is requested that all volunteers in the Women's Center contribute something. We may also be partnering with Men's Minority Leadership Circle and APPS to make this happen. Kelsey also suggested a Zumbathon to raise money for Colorado, which she will be researching this week.

YESPLUS

In a unanimous red card decision, the Women's Center chose not to fund the YESplus event at Appalachian State.

HOMECOMING

If you are interested in helping with the homecoming banner, get in contact with Ariel.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

There is a poster in the Center with random acts of kindness on it. If you have done one recently, put a check next to the act. Emily suggested that we use this sheet to inspire ourselves and others to do good in the world.

ABIGAIL ADAMS

The date of Abigail Adams has been moved up a week from November 14th to November 7th so that we can be in the Solarium. Melanie needs help with Entertainment, Education, Decorations, Advertising, and Chef Recruitment.

TUNNEL OF OPPRESSION

The Center voted for Relationship Violence as the theme this year. Elizabeth will be working on the script, and talk to her or Lindsay if you're interested in performing in the Tunnel. Performances take place over the course of four hours and food and breaks will be provided to all actresses/actors.

APPALACHIAN LEADERSHIP FORUM (ALF)

The Appalachian Leadership Forum, a day-long conference educating attendees about their leadership style and ways to lead, is taking place on November 9th from 8:45am - 1:30pm. The forum includes a women's track, and it's FREE to all Appalachian students. Everyone who attends will be provided lunch by Casa Rustica and given a free t-shirt. Visit csil.appstate.edu to sign up.

VAGINA MONOLOGUES

Crew flyers are ready! If you can, please hang fliers in school buildings and on public bulliten boards, both on-campus and off. Pick them up in the Center.

NEW FURNITURE

The Women's Center will be closed October 10-21st to get new furniture. Thanks to everyone who helped pack up!

GIRL RISING

Two women on campus asked the Center to help fund a Girl Rising showing on campus. The Center voted to support them financially so they can buy rights to the full-length film.

EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS

The Center voted to host their own walk in collaboration with the Counseling Center. We will look at the budget to see how much a speaker would cost for a walk event.
